Background
Tempe Union High School District is aware that we have many young people in our classrooms that are English Language Learners.
The Social Studies Departments at Tempe High and Marcos de Niza were able to experience 5 days of PD from QTEL (Quality Teaching for English Learners) through WestED.
I need to take a moment and recognize the professionalism of our facilitators, Christine and Casey! Both did a fantastic job walking through the purpose of the lesson design of "3 Moments". I can honestly say these sessions were some of my best PD in my 11 years of teacher! Thank you!
Our young people who are bilingual or multilingual deserve educators who are dedicated to creating access to the texts we use to learn from.
Using sociocultural pedagogy and future-orientated pedagogy, opportunities for learning the English language for our young people need to be embedded throughout our content and not stand alone. Humans do not learn separately from the context they are experiencing or feeling.
Our job as educators is not easy. Our job as educators is to continue to learn how we can best meet the needs of each and other one of our young people that we get to cross paths with throughout our learning journeys!
I am excited to curate the different tasks that we have engaged with so that this can a central location to intentionally identify the tasks that are needed matching with the explicit purpose of the learning.
Check out the two books below for more information about these specific ideas about pedagogy and tasks!

Moment 1
Preparing the Learner
These tasks will be used to help the learner begin to think about their lived experiences and how the concepts/themes that we will be engaging with are connected. Every young person has vast knowledge and understandings that enrich our learning spaces.
Let's acknowledge and celebrate this!
Purposes
- Focus attention on concepts to be developed
- Activate (or build) relevant background knowledge
- Introduce essential vocabulary in context

Moment 2
Interacting with the Text
These tasks are helping learners be intentional about identifying key elements of the text that will add to our collective understanding.
These tasks will never make this part of the process of learning easy but it will help build our understandings!
Purposes
- Deconstruct text; focus on understanding a chunk
- Reconnect chunk to whole text
- Establish connections between ideas within text

Moment 3
Extending Understanding
Our young people are dope. Our monolingual, bilingual and multilingual young people bring perspectives that enrich all of our learning experiences! These tasks extend the learning and conversation for more demonstration of understanding!
Let's push and build our learning!
Purposes
- Re-create text in a new genre or create new text based on new understanding
- Apply newly gained knowledge to novel situations or use to problem-solve
- Connect ideas learned to other ideas outside the text
