Examining Primary Documents with Writing Prompt
As we begin this process to develop arguments by examining primary sources (documents) we need to make sure we set ourselves up for success.
To get the most out of reading these types of documents follow this checklist
1. Read through everything that is on the document. Read the Source information. Read the Note that will provide relevant background information.
2. Examine the pictures, graphs, charts, and writings by asking questions about what it is that is presented.
3. Read the questions that are being asked and determine if they are Open-Ended Questions (multiple correct answers) or if the question is a Close-Ended Question and there is one correct answer.
4. Reread the documents to make sure you understand what they are and what information they are trying to give. Look up any words or concepts that you do not know to help your understanding.
5. Attempt to answer the questions.
