Humanism

Schools of Thought in Psychology
"We have a natural drive toward health;
just as a plant, given sunshine, water and proper care will reach its natural maturity,
so will humans reach theirs, absent harsh and punitive treatment."
---- Carl R. Rogers ----
Working Definition (my own words)
Humanism is a practice within psychology that recognizes that humans are unique and studies the whole person.

Abraham Maslow's Contribution to the Humanistic Movement in Psychology
  Notes -

How does the Humanistic School of Thought in Psychology explain why I am who I am?
Evaluating who I am through the scope of humanistic psychology, I would have to look at my environment growing up and the idea of self that this environment instilled in me. According to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, I always had my physiological, safety, love/belonging and esteem needs met in order for myself to grow and be able to self-actualize. Because of the environment of growing up in a home with two parents, loving siblings, being able to pursue what I wanted athletically and academically, positive relationships with friends, these things have allowed me to develop a positive self-image and self-worth according to Carl Rogers. I can identify with the tenets of a Fully Functioning Person which says a lot again about the conditions of my upbringing.

Because of these things the image that I selected is my parents. These two made sure to love my unconditionally but also give consequences for behavior that was not respectful of others and myself. I was always held to the standard of doing my best and if that happened with who they knew me to be they were going to support the end result.
