Driving Question
How can the power of personal narratives enhance our understanding of historical events, and what role does oral history play in preserving and presenting diverse perspectives on the past?
Project Description
Through the "Around the Fire: Exploring History through Oral Narratives" project, students will begin to navigate the world of historical thinking and oral history, acquiring a multifaceted set of skills and insights. They will begin to develop understanding of historical events by engaging with primary sources, analyzing evidence, and considering multiple perspectives. In the process, students will explore the art of oral history, honing their research and interview skills as they connect with individuals who have personal connections to their chosen historical theme. By delving into these oral narratives, students will learn to appreciate the richness and complexity of personal experiences within historical contexts. The project encourages critical thinking, ethical considerations, and effective communication as students weave together their findings into a cohesive narrative, presenting a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of the past. Overall, students will emerge from this project with a deeper appreciation for the power of personal stories in shaping historical narratives and a refined skill set for historical inquiry.
